Saturday 17th October – sightseeing then bike *** cloudy – Ouvrages du Libron nr. Vias to the sea at La Tamarissiere nr. Adge. 17 .50 miles, out 2hrs 40 mins.

A cloudy morning on the etang and a white van fisherman decided to park alongside before we had even got up! We had an hour or so on the free wifi then left Port Nautique and drove through Gruissan, Narbonne Plage, St. Pierre –sur Mer and stopped for a lovely walk on the beach at Les Cabanes de Fleurynr . We have never been there before and it was very quiet and had lots of shells! Not a breath of wind today. There were quite a few mozzies though! Spotted that one of the rear tyres has gone down a bit since yesterday so looks like we might have a slow puncture :( Left there and drove to meet up with the Canal du Midi towards Agde where it enters an etang and goes into the sea near Sete. We had a few false starts but finally found somewhere to park at the Ouvrages du Libron near Vias. There is a strange network of pipes and wheels across the canal which apparently help the river Libron go over the Canal when it is in flood which prevents the canal filling up with sand and other stuff from the river. Very complicated and quite ugly but probably very clever!! We had a very late lunch at 4 and got the bikes off. We biked along the tow path towards Agde but have to say it was pretty skanky – starting with a rundown amusement park, several virtually derelict boats in the canal, an encampment of people down on their luck in a copse of trees, like a small village and some of them had strung a strap across the bike path to tightrope walk on and we had to lift the bikes over it – they just ignored us. So it just has a neglected and scummy feel to it:( Got to Agde and the canal basin. There was no signs to let you know which way the canal went into the etang so we just made it up and followed one of the spurs which led to a bigger river, which led to the sea, but we later discovered this was the River Herault so goodness knows how you get to see the canal enter the etang. But hey it was nice to get to the sea and we sat near one of the two lighthouses marking the exit to the sea and ate our pastries. Back the way we came apart from a quick excursion round the town. Got back about 7 having ridden 17 ½ miles and been out for 2 ½ hours. We are staying here tonight and will have to change the tyre tomorrow before putting bikes back on :( Had salmon for tea.
